I was really surprised to read this fact. I've heard that microwave ovens can cause cancer, but what exact type of cancer can halogen lamps cause? (I have one standing 2 ft from my desk.)

Three types of bulbs:
Fluorescent: send current through radioactive gas, get light but not much heat.
Incandescent: send current through tungsten wire in nitrogen or argon gas, get heat and light [these gases are inert]
Halogen: send current through tungsten wire in halogen gas (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine), get light and a lot of heat. These gases are more chemically reactive, so form with the bit of tungsten gas created by heating the wire. These compounds have been found to be carcinogenic.
For the record, most places now sell fluorescent bulbs that fit into traditional sockets. These bulbs are not as hot, use less energy and last much longer than the other types. Just don't break them open. If you do, cover your mouth, evacuate the area and call hazmat. (Like asbestos)
To answer your specific question: like any carcinogen, they cause cancer in the nearest sensitive area: brain, lungs, gonads.
It's all true, and i know this from personal experience:
my late wife got cancer from a halogen lightbulb. she had this thing about style and fashion, so all the lights in the house were halogen. she stayed home all day, and they were used far more in the winter months (we lived in Finland at the time, so it was dark all winter). after about two years of this, a regular checkup at the doctors' surgery resulted in five months of chemotherapy, but to no avail. the cancer (originally in her brain) spread to her hear and lungs.
we lost her - because of the halogen lightbulbs.
That's incredibly tragic. I'm so sorry for your loss. When will folks wake up to what people have started to call the Halogen Holocaust?
