Like many lonely people in the world I am looking for "Mr. Right". My best friend suggested that I try an online dating service. I checked into them and was surprised by what I found. 63% of all married couples that met in an online dating service were married and divorced within one year of meeting...11% of those married within one month of meeting online. Just a heads up to anyone that is thinking of marrying someone they met online...

Another bit of information is that according to the FBI, nearly half of all serial killers caught since the year 2000 have had one or more accounts on the major dating web sites.

That's what really sent me off the web sites and back to the bars!

    My Dearest Amacoo

Perhaps this is an improper time to broach the subject, but let it be known to all that I am available for dating.

I realized that there is a substantial age difference between us, however I am told that I look much younger than my true age of 77.

I enjoy long walks on the beach, dinner, dancing, going to concerts, and getting my "mack on"..

Please let me know when you would like to meet for cocktails.

    With great affection,
    Prof. Winston Astor-Cabot

I appreciate the compliment and while I do enjoy the company of older men, I would prefer that their bedtime not be before 6 pm... Good luck on finding Ms. Right!

Apologies for seeming crass, but with regard to the 'nearly half of all serial killers caught since the year 2000 have had one or more accounts on the major dating web sites' statistic, I think the relevant figure is the percentage of victims lured via online dating websites.

This figure might then be contrasted with those who fell victim as a result of attending a bar. IMO people are generally more careful when arranging a meeting online than they are when going to their local pub.

Of course, another way of viewing that statistic is 'most (i.e. more than half) serial killers do not use online dating websites.' It is important to establish the relevance of a statistic - but then I know it was intended just as an FYI :)

(I should point out I've not used online dating before, and that I rarely attend bars. In fact, I really should get out more.)

The problem with actually dating online is that people can mask and change their personalities at will.

For example, you have an email conversation with a girl and she replies with quite a witty and sexy response. If that was in real life you would know that that was genuinely her, but online you don't know how long she took to come up with that or whether she has sources unknown to you etc etc. My friend did a psychology PhD on exactly this subject, the disparity between online and real personalities. Largest difference was in self-esteem.

Plus it's more fun wandering around a club asking random girls if they want to fuck.

    Dear Amacoo

I understand your reservations regarding my age, however, please do not forget that I am a scientist, and thus, I am privvy to some of the greatest pharmacuticals before they are available to the public at large.

For instance I am able to "stay up" longer than you would believe, and because of advanced "life-extension" treatments, I am celebrated throughout the world as being the most rigid and erect 77 year old man on record!

    Claynoik,

I have taken up the gauntlet, so to speak. Or I took it up, rather. It seems that research indicates a couple of things:
The internet is being used more and more by predators, naturally.
For repeat stalkers, the number of those using the net to find people to stalk is growing, but still down at 24%. Their use of the 'net as part of the stalking, however, is over 80%.
Single-time stalkers tend to do it all "the good old-fashioned way." Only 7% use the internet at all.

  4.

As for online couples having large divorce rates, that may be true, but my good friend met his wife on the internet and they just recently celebrated their 5th anniversary, and they have a baby on the way. Just goes to show you that statistics can fail to mention successes.

It may be worth noting that my friend has been seeing a mistress for about 4 of those 5 years

  5.

Did he meet his mistress online, too? If he did, it's just another example of how we're truly becoming a wired society.

  6.

Unfortunatly he did not meet his mistress online, she was his wedding cake decorator.

So perhaps the best place to pick up a wife is online, but for a mistress, you have to wait for the wedding...

    Hi,
This blog post of mine should serve as a causionary tale to anyone considering online dating. The short of it is that there are some emotionally dishonest women -- men too, I guess -- and it makes it diffilcult to know if what she's saying is honest.

    See:

Or if that does not work then this

And now I'm off to announce the biggest downfall of online dating.

58% of all online profiles are misleading or incorrect in some degree.

So that woman you all thought was slender...could be...well...not.

The problem with online dating is that by the time it comes to the rejection or acceptance decision you have already invested a fair amount of time, which is almost always not the case in the real world, and even if it is you already have a very good idea which you and her are going to choose. Certainly I'd far rather be rejected by a random pretty girl who I just noticed 1 minute ago, than some woman I'd been building a relationship with for god knows how long.

That’s just because they just jump in both feet first and you can’t do that... although I’ve gotten the short end of the deal once or twice. One woman in San Fran (thank god I’m not there anymore) almost slipped some cocaine in my drink when we went on a trip to Tahoe. Other than that the most common discrepancy that I come across is the “body type” category. Everyone has their own opinion as to what “a few extra pounds” actually is.

Yeah, I remember reading about that divorce rate. What I found really interesting was when they compared lifestyles through random interviews with the successful couples (lasting more than 1 year). Some of the couples mentioned that they realized early on they were able to fix communication problems by networking the house and chatting with each other from separate rooms as a part of their foreplay.
