    Is it not 'a knot of octopi'?

    "Some of the more colorful collective nouns are a murder of crows, an ostentation of peacocks, and a knot of octopuses."

    Every dictionary that I checked listed both "octopi" and "octopuses" as the plural forms, and most listed "octopuses" first.

    Technically, the plural should be "octopata".

    ambulences or ambuli?
    Mongooses or mongi?
    Platypuses or Platipi?

    Even if it's not ambuli, I'll still say it that way :)

    The plural of mongoose is mongeese.

    From one website I've found, the proper plural for octopus is actually octopodes. =)
