I just did the research, and it looks like there are about 1600 pandas in the wild as of 2004.
---------------------------------
That's a giant oversight.
Well, sure, as of 2004. However, there was a trifecta of causes that decimated the population starting in the summer of 2005. First, there was the bamboo blight in Eastern China, which caused the growth of new bamboo to all but stop for the last two years. Then there was the Eatoin Shrdlu virus that decimated the Asian populations of the opossum, panda, bear, wolverine, and other large carnivores -- though they've recently started spraying to kill the mosquito larvae that eventually spread the disease. Finally, global warming has apparently caused the estrus of the female panda to shift by a month, but the male pandas are apparently not receptive to the scent that early in the season, and so the birth of new pandas in the wild has essentially stopped for the past five years. All in all, it probably won't be long before these creatures are found only in zoos.
I was referring to the factoid reading like this:
Posted By: TaedThere are fewer than 200 giant pandas still alive, half of which are in zoos.
A giant oversight on their part, not yours.
