October 2, 2004 this was posted in Gullible:
"The Vatican has a 5,000 square foot library that was sealed in 1215, with specific instructions that it was not to be opened until February 19, 2010."
For all my research about the subject I've not been able to find any information to confirm this. Some sources even refer to this as a hoax started in the internet and sadly enough the citations are an exact dump of the Gullible phrase which makes me think Gullible started this :)
Can anyone tell me where was this information retrieved from and provide some valid source?
The sealed stone doors to that "Secret Library of the Vatican" can be seen on one of their extended tours. I saw them about 20 years ago when I visited. I don't think it's existence is intended to be secret, but the contents certainly are. If I recall correctly, the tour guide downplayed the whole "secret knowledge" angle and suggested that it is just a sort of time capsule that was created by Pope Innocent III and the Fourth Lateran Council. This was apparently a not-uncommon practice in those days, since the tour guide mentioned that there had been other "secret vaults" that had been opened over the centuries, but that it was the last one that was still sealed and the only one that was in the library itself.
I imagine that, barring a trip to the Vatican itself, that the Vatican web site might have a floor plan available or some information on it. Perhaps they refer to it by some Latin or Italian phrase such that your searches end up not finding anything?
