After some extensive research on the fact posted today (10 April) about eating Sandalwood incense, I have discovered that Sandalwood is fatal if the smoke is inhaled. However, it is fatal only when inhaled for extended periods of time. Physicians recomend exposure to small amounts of sandalwood smoke for no more than 2 hours per day. Or an equivalent amount as burning two sticks of the incense.

Also related to this fact is an interesting tidbit about buddhist monks. Turns out that they spent many hours inhaling the smoke of Sandalwood every day, more than enough to be fatal to the average person. However, they were exposed to the stuff beginning at a very young age and trained their bodies to build a tolerance to it.

Interesting...there's a Buddhist tradition that you're not supposed to just leap headlong into meditation, but rather, build yourself up to meditating for extended periods of time. Maybe it could have been that the people who leaped headlong into it were more likely to be poisoned by the sandalwood, so tradition evolved around the necessity.

I'm not sure if that's how it happened or not, but it's certainly a possibility.

Likely, but I also think they don't meditate in airtight rooms. Circulating air could dilute the concentration of the smoke, so a person might be able to last a little longer than 2 hours.
