"The toll-free number (888) 888-8888 was recently purchased by Alliance Carpet Installation And Repair for $1.2 million in AT&T's first auction-format sale of a phone number."

According to http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-888-8888 it appears whomever bought this number either sold it to another company, or is not a carpet installer :-P.

Any idea where I can find info about ATTs auction?

This fact is listed in our database from March 2, 2007. There is a large possibility that the number has since changed hands, one of the fact checkers may be able to do some follow up research for you.

Nope, it's still Alliance Carpet -- just call the number, though it's only valid in small parts of the country. You can also do a reverse lookup on Anywho.com. And if you live in Southern New Jersey, you'd surely be familar with that catchy (but annoying after the 10th time in a day) jingle of theirs -- "If you need a carpet there today / then call Alliance right away / Dial 8s / that's the way / and we'll be there the same day... Alliance..." And then that woman (who some people think is hot, but I think is a skanky ho) shows the idiots in the room how to dial all 8s, as if they couldn't figure it out without some scantily-clad model demonstrating it for them.

It's common for telemarketers to fake their Caller ID information, so people at that web site are getting calls from people who are faking the Caller ID with that number.
