The "Sunshine Commune" in southern Montana, with over 400 estimated residents, has not had contact with the outside world since the late 1950s.

I've done all the research I can on this, and can't find anything! Where could I find info like the statement above?

    Thanks!

How would anyone know what their population is if there's been no contact in 60 years?

That's why it's an estimate. The fact-checker who submitted that was a cousin of one of the commune members. He started with the original population and factored in approximate birth and death rates, then extrapolated from there.

so it really could be like a made up thing? a couple friends who started this a while back and disbanded?

According to your statement, they must have had contact with the outside world seeing has his cousin talked with him about it, yes?

Well, Athene points out correctly that one could make an educamated guess about what the population is. As I recall they were a rather promiscuous group and could therefore be quite numerous.

The cousin has not had any contact with her relative since December of 1957, I have learned -- so exactly 60 years. It's interesting to speculate. They haven't had the benefit of the most modern medicine (I wonder if they've developed any of their own.) yet, at least presumably, they haven't had to deal with AIDS or necrotizing fasciitis and whatever other new-ish problems we've had.

Well, with a bit of research down at the statehouse, I've discovered that there is a relatively large area of land that is under the name of Sunshine Commune. I would think it's safe to say that this is the Sunshine Commune in question.

I recently passed by the lands of the Sunshine Commune. They have signs around the perimeter: Sunshine Commune. No Trespassing. Updated May 2007.

The date was a removable sign, which indeed appeared much newer than the identification sign. So they do let us know that they are still there and alive.

    Updated May 2007.

I think they're still on the Julian Calendar so that would have actually been April 2007.

anybody have an address, or an idea on the location they could possibly pull up on google maps for me?

i'm def interested in doing a news story on it.

  1.

If they refused to make contact with you, that would be def boring. News without (inter)views sucks.
    I'm hip.

Another interesting fact that I dug up is that the movie "The Village" is rumored to have been based on the Sunshine Commune.
