    60%??? Really??

    • According to a recent U.S. Department of Education status report, only 60 percent of American high school students can point to both Andorra and Djibouti on a world map, which is cited as yet another example of our failing public educational system.

As if we'd publish something we are not sure of.

I was also quite surprised at how low that 60% number was. I suspect that the person who started this thread was, like myself, educated in a different time when our public school system was much more successful. While this is just one example in the report, it wasn't so long ago that nearly every graduate of high school could name and find just about every country in the world.

  2.

I didn't know Djibouti existed when you were educated.

Try adding the GeographyZone to your google gadgets (igoogle.com) and then playing that. It's not quite as easy as you might think, especially trying to locate somewhere like Krzygistan, Hertzovakia or The Solemn Islands

  3.

Are you from the United States, Piggie? I think most people I know are aware of those countries locations. I'll take a straw poll this evening and get back to you.

  4.

What percentage are left when ask these questions. As soon as you fail you are out....

    What is Djibouti ? 60%

    Where is Djbouti ? 40%

Ok - where specifically in Africa? 15%

What sea or ocean is it next to - or is it inland? 10%

Name one other country it borders. 8%

Do you think I am too pessimistic? I failed the last one incidentally

I'd say that 60% is actually high, especially concerning if Jay Leno went Jaywalking and asked that question, no one would get that right.

How many people do you think don't get on camera because they know the answer?

  5.

If they're young people, I'd guess roughly six out of ten.

Sorry, you're right, I should have been more clear. I mean just searching, not just the people on camera. So like everyone they interviewed. And to be honest, Jaywalking was a really bad example. I hear other people though and they have no idea. My mom has no idea, neither does my stepdad or anyone else I know, except for maybe my European History teacher...

And then only if he's French

I wonder what the actual figure is. I'm certain most people I know wouldn't even know Djibouti is a country - they'd probably think it was a nightclub.

A great way to learn the countries.

I heard Djibouti. I didn't catch Andorra, though.

Excellent - I wish I had a hi-res version of that. And a suitable memory.

There are a handful of countries missing - but it's an old clip and it's just for fun!

I never knew there was a country in Africa called Dahomey.

    Wow.
