I was on the team of fact checkers that researched this, and living in Michigan as I do comes in handy. You won't find anything online about this because the auto makers understandably want to keep it quiet. This factoid actually came to light while I was having dinner with a friend of mine, whose father is a retired designer for one of the big 3 auto makers. My friend, S, we'll call her, was telling me that her father was complaining, as older people do, about the new crop of designers and how they were moving them all out of Detroit, which didn't matter because nothing had happened there since 1980. When I made a few discreet calls, I was able to confirm his griping.

In fact, the last car designed in Detroit was done in the local Holiday Inn by a team of engineers & designers from Toyota in Japan. They had been visiting Detroit on a fact-finding/knowledge-sharing trip and had seen some things that inspired them and they designed literally 85% of the car (I am not at liberty to disclose which model) right there in Detroit.
