If one were to do a more complex search, such as:

    (mouse OR rodent) NEXT* trap

You get over 6000 patents from the USPTO.

    * - here NEXT is better than using AND, since it is more specific

  1.

We came across the same numbers that you did. However, in the course of our research, we found that not all of those patents are specifically for total mousetraps. Many are patents for specific pieces of traps. So we had our intern review the almost 10,000 records we found and he determined that there were only 1,289 for complete, self-functioning mousetraps.

One wonders how large the number would be if you included the international (PCT) applications.

Using an extensive database available to government workers (yes I am one) I was able to find the answer to your question. Through extensive research actually, my lackey was able to find the answer, and the number of "complete, self-functioning" mouse traps, using the international (PCT) applications, is 4,792. Although I heavily suspect that many of these are just knock offs or copies of past and present designs.
