Hi - where did you get the fact that the Empire State Building was originally called the Citadel? Thanks

From the research done by fact checkers, of course!

Well, ag, we are proud that none of our information comes from Wikipedia or any popular online reference source. That's what keeps people coming back for more. The facts on this site are rare enough to ensure constant interest from its audience. Now, while the guarantee can't be made that it hasn't been said this site isn't fun, we can at least say the opposite, that it is not been said or is fun, or not. This of course undoubtedly holds true for the Empire State Building/Citadel fact also.

I'm the author of that particular fact, and I discovered it on one of those historical plaques on the viewing deck of The Empire State Building. A quick phone call to the historical society confirmed the information. In the last week, we also received copies of some of the original blueprints from a reader, and those also refer to the building as "The Citadel".

It was only known as the Citadel during its construction. There was controversy over calling it the Empire State Building, even though New York is the Empire State. At that time the word Empire had perjorative implications to many Americans who had escaped from various 'Empires'.

It was informally called the Citadel until the major of New York city declared in 1931 that "This Empire State building will be an inspiration to Americans everywhere, and none more so than my fellow New Yorkers".

Theoretically the final height of the building was a well-kept secret as there was a 'competition' with the Chrysler building. This is of course laughable. Plans had to be lodged with City Hall. At the time there were rumours of impropriety. It was suggested that money passed hands so the plans could be modified at the last moment to add the radio tower / mast.

That can't be right. Mike Bloomberg wasn't even born in 1931.

[ED], you write speeches for politicians, don't you?

Certain statesmen prefer a bit of indirect disclarity when writing their speeches and promises. That way, what is really not a very nonoffensive statement can come off quite indecisively, often creating a general muddle and confusion which politicians prefer to sometimes, but not always, refer to as "the state of the union," and conjunctly achieve an optimization of current compensation allocation.

That's not cool to do that to a dog.
