    "In six countries worldwide, it is illegal to give a girl a boy's name, and vice versa"

    I'm trying to find the list of countries this statement references. Can anyone help me?

    I ran a query in the Gulli-base, our fact-checking archive, and found all six. However, it looks like I can only legally disclose one of the countries: Sealand. I cannot disclose the source of the information for the other five, but a good place to begin your research would be here.

    Actually, in some countries the punishment rests with either the child, or the parents, who name the child.

    Im pretty sure Sealand follows some sort of fine system, such as naming a boy 'Mary' would result in a hefty fine (And, I believe, some jail time!), though when naming a girl 'Nick' would bring about a similar consequence. Doing my own research, which might be slightly flawed as im using a set of outdated encyclopedia sets, ive found out that in two of those six countries multi-sex names are banned altogether, such names like 'Alex'.

    I dont know what sort of system the other countries follow, sadly.

    Though, as I said im using outdated encyclopedias from around 96', so someone would need to back me on these facts.

    And we are discounting the fact that a number of nations will not permit a female child to be called Mohamed.

    Djibuti is another. They are a stickler for "law and order" there.

    Lithuania is one. This is a fairly recent ruling, since gender-neutral names became common about 15 years ago. The gender-neutral names are still allowed, however, it is strictly forbidden to name a boy "Ekaterina", for example.

    Naturally, since that's only one male name and not all male names.

    I remember a girl in high school named Christopher... her family had to cancel their trip to Djibouti because of her name.

    Really? Was it Christopher Hollens? She's my cousin and when my uncle found out about the law he was really pissed for sure! Had to cancel it. They went to Hawaii instead. I can't believe you went to high school with my cousin!!
