Worldwide we would save a combined total of over 40 million dollars in energy if Google Search engine changed the background of its homepage from white to black.
Wherever did you come across this information?
Like I said to the worker at my local chip shop: you got any sauces?
Unfortunately, according to Google, that isn't true

And I was so ready to believe that.
I can set the speed of my new screen saver anywhere between fast and eco-friendly.
I'm not sure google can be trusted on this one. I think that the cost of them changing the homepage and specialized webpages of millions, perhaps even greater than a billion, of users is just too much, so they made up statistics to justify the status quo.
Anyone have an ammeter? How would you even test it?
Connect your PC to a UPS and detach the power and see how long before the UPS gives up the ghost.
Well of course google wouldn't admit to info like this being true. That wouldn't help their evil schemes one bit.
I talked to an engineer friend who works at JDSU in happy hour, and we were talking about the butterfly effect and the book the Tipping Point by Marcolm. I said (Gullible.Info style) if only Google would do a small thing such as changing their searching engine's background from white to black, the world would save enormous energy per year.
He spit on my face and said, LCDs take the same amount of energy to powerup pixels of any color.
Sorry guys, I failed to spread the gullible spirit.
People seem to forget that most screens out there are still old-fashioned vacuum devices, and those DO take more energy to display white.
Other things that can help...
Switch on autohide for the taskbar.
Use an all-black screen saver (non animated)
Ensure your dvd is empty if you are not using it.
Switch off the light in the room when using the computer.
Sincerely, Ecolustrious

The energy required to lower & lift the taskbar has been proven to exceed any cost-saving benefits from hiding it.
5. Switch the computer off when you will not be using it for a while.

If you get a task bar that is just as light as the rest of your screen it requires minimal energy to lift and lower it.
To Priya:
Whilst your motives are admirable, please try and be more realistic.
There is no reality. I do not know what 'realistic' you are talking about.
(The first sentence reminds me of "There is no spoon" from Matrix)

Not even that... just turn off the monitor when you walk away. Frustrates snoopers, too.
And my parents, which is why I've had to stop doing that

Oh but Priya that is all the more reason to keep doing it. Personally, I think you should just walk up to the monitor when they are on the computer and switch it off, smile and say "got to help save the whales."
LOL! Thanks, but I don't wanna die at 16...
