OK... I really don't understantd what is meant by: Social scientists have estimated that anyone who has lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years is separated from Abraham Lincoln by no more than 7 degrees. The average separation will increase by one degree in approximately 14 years.

    Can someone clear this up?:billnye:

It's related to that "6 degrees of separation" theory. That one states that any person on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through no more than 6 people. So you were friends with John Doe in 2nd grade (1 degree) who went on to Hign School with Jane Roe (2nd degree) who took a course in college with a Professor Poe (3rd degree) who lived with the aborigines in Australia where he became acquainted with Chief Coe (4th degree) who has a woman in his group named Ms Moe (5th degree) who has a cousin who lives at Ayres Rock named Pete. (6th degree).

For Lincoln, I know my father (1 degree) who worked for a guy (2nd degree) a while ago who had been in the State Department. He had met FDR (3rd degree) who can be traced back to Lincoln in many ways through 3 people. So I am 6 degrees from Lincoln.

    Good theory.

I have a small friend list on facebook, but if my friendships (not that I know what it means) were to mapped as a graph, where the people of the 1st degree from me are all my friends, and the 2nd degree from me are all my friends plus all their friends, and so on, I believe the people of the 6th degree from me would well cover all people in my university and a good chunk of others universities.

To show some nasty numbers, if each person has 20 non-mutual friends, the 6th degree would cover 20^6 (1.2 million) people.

I love graph problems. I still remember pulling all nighter coding Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm.

if each person has 20 non-mutualfriends,

You must have friends who aren't very likable. Atilla the Hun had 47 people he called "good friends". and dozens more he said "I'd be reluctant to kill for sport."

As far as I know, the 7 degree factoid is an offshoot from a study by the CDC on STDs.

Oh no -- This is independent research I did. I never consulted the CDC or even my family physician.

  1.

I read an article posted on the SCDDCCA that will back you up on that; they work with the RFOP and the WTF to verify independent research.
