Posted By: shadesofsisyphusAnd the only things on earth worth anything are things with limited quantities, i.e. why diamonds are so expensive.
Of course scarcity increases the price, but the price of diamonds outstrips all logic.
This is true, but it is the qualities of diamonds that make them valuable. They are incredible durable, can be made to be very very beautiful, and are very rare (relative to most other things on earth). And I doubt that any woman on Earth would say "the price of diamonds outstrips all logic" and I bet they would stone you for saying such a blasphemy (and not the good kind of stoned).
chill guys, i was being cute.
Speaking of value, here's a check list about me:
quality / qualification
===================
durable / check
very beautiful / check
women-friendly / check
dubmass / under inspection
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusbut it is the qualities of diamonds that make them valuable.
No it's not. There's nothing intrinsic that makes a high-quality diamond thousands of times more valuable than a lower-quality diamond. It's mostly marketing, but the scarcity issue is a factor.
Posted By: Haoestand I doubt that any woman on Earth would say "the price of diamonds outstrips all logic"
Oh man. You're willing to generalize about women? You must really be living on the top of some mountain without any other person anywhere near.
Posted By: Haoestdubmass / under inspection[/p]
Dubmass? Is your mass dubbed or something?
When Chinese people read your weight it's shown by a Chinese scale?
In computer science, there is no true random. In reality, there's one, and that is women. Try guess how Athene is going to come back aftert this post.

LOL trance you are so cute.
Ummm, did you just call Trance cute? Hmmmmmmm...
And I have yet to meet a woman anywhere of any age who was not madly in love with diamonds. Also, there are intrinsic qualities in diamonds that make them more valuable:
Four C's
Cut
Clarity
Color (colour)
and Carat.
Of the four, Cut is the only one that is determined by man (carat weight can be reduced, but never increased)
Hence intrinsically more expensive = Clear, no inclusions, and high weight. Most women could actually tell you the color and clarity scales off the top of their heads.
Come on, I know there is a woman here who will back me on this..
Er, thanks?
I would love to back you, but...

The name's Margaret, and I don't care about diamonds. Nice to meet you, Shades.
Shades... What a cool nickname.

To say diamonds are "very rare" is a gross overstatement. Diamonds are horded by the DeBeers cartel and released in small amount. That is why there are extremely few places on the planets where one can go searching for one's own gems. If they didn't control them, diamonds would devalue in a heartbeat.

Exactly. Why do you think it is that you can go out and buy a diamond bit drillbit for roughly 15 dollars? It's because the diamonds are small enough that these damn cartels don't give a damn. The average consumer diamond drillbit has about 1/4 of a carat of diamond, i'm sure you know of the rip-off prices some jewelry stores charge for this.
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusI have yet to meet a woman anywhere of any age who was not madly in love with diamonds.
With each post --- in fact, with each sentence I revise my estimate of your age downward.
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusAlso, there are intrinsic qualities in diamonds that make them more valuable:
Four C's
Rubbish. The only quality that makes a diamond intrinsically more valuable is its hardness and therefore its industrial usefulness.
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusintrinsically more expensive
Um -- what does "intrinsically more expensive" mean? Is it any different than "more expensive"?
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusMost women could actually tell you the color and clarity scales off the top of their heads.
Utter rubbish. Complete and total nonsense. Some can. More can't.
Udo -- good post.
So, am i just neutral?
Hehe -- Okay, eagle, you elucidated the point well, too.
I feel so loved!

dont they use industrial diamonds?
Yes, which are too small to bother the stupid diamond cartels.

Buy mfg diamonds; they're cheaper.

I do! I'm very much the same.
Value isn't important to me, it's all about the sentimentals!

Japenese? Oooh! What style? What does that say?
Or is it Chinese? I'm not good at distinguishing.
WTF, what am i missing???? i see 3 equality marks ("===") on left of the smiley face.
I see Japanese characters, but then I have Japanese fonts installed that allow me to.
Oh no, there's another dimension to this forum?
I don't see what you see.
It's Kanji. Both the Chinese and the Japanese use it but the symbols mean different things in each language.
I'm a little rusty but as best I can make out in Japanese it says, "This'll drive Haoest f-ing nuts"
In Chinese it says "Eat at Joes"
Grats it worked.
Coincidentally, if you add one stroke to each letter, in Japanese it could read "Bon Jovi Rules!"

Ummm... not this one. I don't like diamonds (or gold for that matter) so much that my engagement/wedding ring is a sapphire.
that's 2-0, 3-0 including me.

That reminds me when I was trying to convince this girl I worked with that "sapphire" was named after "Sappho," Queen of the Isle of Lesbos, and therefore a woman giving another woman a sapphire ring meant she was a lesbian.
Your point?

Actually, shades is 0-2. 0-3 including you. But you were close!
some ppl r 2 arrogant to put others in front.
Crap, apparently my entire life experience is wrong. And what was your initial estimate of my age Oh mighty King Totum?
I do, however, find it amazing that I can go as long as I have without meeting any woman not in love with diamonds and then hear from two on the same day.
Might I ask why you dont like them?
And Intrinsically more expensive = more expensive due to the stone itself, not any alterations. Intrinsically is an adverb.
and that is my attempt at correcting a "whoopsy"
I don't recall what my first impression was about your age but now I would guess late High School age.
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusAnd Intrinsically more expensive = more expensive due to the stone itself, not any alterations.
I'd define the intrinsic value of a diamond as the value ascribed to or derived from the usefulness of the diamond itself -- which would mean it's value as an industrial tool and would discount the value one can ascribe to the marketing and artificial scarcity. I don't really get what you mean by more expensive due to the stone itself, not any alterations."
Maybe a parallel illustration will help. The intinisc value of the new Washington dollar coins that were struck without the "In God we Trust" is either $1 or the value of the materials used to make the coin -- take your pick. The market value is something more than either of those numbers because of the scarcity of the coins and the increased demand.
Why are we fighting? Let's all lighten up a little. Or post a big ol drama bomb in the garbage chute.

LOL. Illustration is powerful.

I like the addition. It's cool to know I'm not alone!
Just for the record, kudos to Mr. Fact "The King" Totum for engaging the enemy on four different fronts and remaining victorious throughout numerous skirmishes. Perhaps his abundance of heads and tall stature (being a totum) puts him in this position.
And for another record - man alive, is this thread vicious! I'm stressing out just reading it...whew. All jokes were splattered on the windows of the juggernaut Hissyfit. And this made me laugh - it is amazing. How many women do you meet?
Posted By: shadesofsisyphusI do, however, find it amazing that I can go as long as I have without meeting any woman not in love with diamonds and then hear from two on the same day.
I had to read this thread from the beginning, as I missed it in its entirety. ED is right. The normal needling was replaced by wholescale harpooning.
I will rebel against the crowd. In my experience, large diamonds are often viewed in a green environment. (See Chemistry of Women)
On a completely different issue. I was sadly disappointed that the fiendishly-difficult-to-spell Fibonacci series dropped off the thread radar around message 2. I had to wade through the rest of the following diatribes in an uncertain hope of resurrection. Twas not to be.
Now we shall never discuss the biological implications of the FS.
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many useful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

Thanks. I kinda miss ol' Zymurgy. I wonder what happened to him.
Dropped off the end of the alphabet, I guess. May be resurrected as Aardvark
I've heard the Fibonacci series is present in pineapples. Then I hear it goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...I think, is that right? My question is, why is it beautiful?
