I think we forgot that he was wearing those same shoes when he gave the famous "Checkers" speech.
Yeah, he would wear them a lot. He called them his "lucky" shoes, but he would only wear them when he knew good things were going to happen, so why he wore them the day he resigned is a mysterey.
I actually read somewhere that one of the shoes had been gnawed upon by Checkers, but he kept them nonetheless.
