    I thought it'd be a good idea to see which submarine sandwiches offer more for your money.

    In the food industry, bread and flour products in general are very inexpensive, and therefore carry a high profit margin. Meat, cheese, and other sandwich goodies are more expensive to purchase wholesale, and therefore carry a much lower profit margin.

    Oddly enough, the rule "the heavier the food, the lower the profit margin" applies extremely well to the food industry (if you don't believe this, go grocery shopping and weight your foods). This rule doesn't apply to beverages or foodstuffs that are primarily liquid.

    Because this rule works so well, it can be applied very easily to submarine sandwiches or any other food that combines breads with other foodstuffs....

    Purchasing a number of different brand submarine sandwhiches*, I did the following:

    1. Weight the entire sandwich
    2. Disassemble the sandwhich, weighing only the bread*
    3. Divide the Total Weight by the Bread Weight, as such:

    Ratio = Total sandwich weight/Bread-only weight

    The HIGHER the ratio, the more value you're getting.

    Here's my results so far....

    All sandwhiches were 3 meat, 1 cheese, lettuce+tomato+onions on generic white bread....nothing else!

    Subway
    Bread = 5 oz
    Total= 8 oz
    ratio: 1.6

    Quiznos
    Bread = 6 oz
    Total = 12 oz
    ratio: 2.0

    Redi Deli
    Bread = 7 oz
    Total = 17 oz
    ratio: 2.43

    McAllister's Deli
    Bread = 6 oz
    Total = 11 oz
    ratio: 1.8

    So far, Redi Deli (a little family-owned sub shop near my home) has the best value, while Subway (A national chain with a weird guy as its mascot), has the worst. Feel free to add your own measurements, but please stick to the protocol, as I'd like to keep this as scientific as possible.

    Also, please eat the sub(s) you purchase after measuring them - even if they are a bit dry (with no condiments and all) - no point in wasting more food than we already do!)

    * For this to work, you must purchase sandwhiches with NO CONDIMENTS (mayonaise, mustard, oil, etc.), as they are applied directly to the bread, are heavy, but are inseperable from the bread - thereby skewing the ratios.

    When you say "other" do you mean the entire sandwhich or just the fillings?

    Sorry - we first were going to measure the bread, then everything else, but realized that we could save a step by measuring the entire sandwhich, then just the bread. It was just a wording error on my part (the numbers were for the TOTAL weight, dispite the mis-labeling). I've fixed it now.

    Allright, it's a shame: I only recognise Subway from that list, and the nearest one is 8 miles away.

    You've just scratched the surface...

    Places to get a burger:
    ~McDonalds
    ~Burger King
    ~Wendys (a higher quality McDonalds)
    ~Arbys (a slightly lower quality Subway)

    Places to get foreign Americanized food:
    ~Taco Bell (mmmm....)
    ~Usually there is a small mom and pop mexican or chinese resuraunt in most towns

    Misc.:
    ~Applebees (good food, alright price. Its a family oriented sports bar)
    ~IHOP (good place to go for pankacakes if you don't mind gaining a few pounds. Stands for International House of Pancakes)
    ~There's a chain of southern resturaunts like applebees, but the name eludes me.
    ~KFC

    ...And much much more. Usually I would take the time to look them up, but I'm tired. It's 12:18 a.m. here.

    I got a couple words for your British misinformed brain. First off, the president is not mentally challenged. He just makes unpopular decisions that force people to assume that he his mental. Also, we are not all obese here in America. I have only known one true obese kid, and he moved to another state. I still know a couple fat kids, but none of them fit the definition of obese. In fact, I know this one kid that is dargerously thin. He takes pills to get fatter. And with recent bans on trans fat and sugar in schools and major cities, things are not looking good for him.
    _________
    I'm not suprised that Subway lost out. I mean, they put 3 pieces of meat on a sandwhich. However, their Italian BMT, when toasted, is quite good.
    _________
    Question: Were the subs toasted? Also, what size were they? I know that Subway has 6"/1' and Quiznos has Small/Med/Large. Mabey you should take those into consideration.

    I used 6" subs, but some were a bit larger. It's the ratio I'm looking at, which shouldn't change based on the size of the sub, so I didn't mention it earlier. If I'd used larger or smaller subs, the individual weights would, of course, change but the ratios would not (in theory, anyway).

    Also, the quiznos bread was (as always) toasted. The others were not. Since toasted bread weights the same as untoasted bread (at least to the low degree of accuracy I'm using - notice I'm rounding to the whole oz.), I left that part off as well.

    Also, I used ounces as measurement for the US kiddies. Of course, since we're looking at ratios, it would be exactly the same no matter what unit I measured in.

    How does that saying go? Buy a man a fish and he eats for a night. Teach a man to shop at a grocery store instead of fattening the wallets of formerly overweight communications majors and he'll eat forever.

    Not me. The only seafood I like is calamari, so I die when my seafood-loving family goes to the seafood buffet.

    We don't have those here in Michigan - what is that?

    My favorite subs are from Charley's - they're all hot subs, which would disqualify them from the measurements, as they're cooked with various sauces. However, in my opinion, nothing beats a chicken teriyaki sub with a side of cheese fries. Yum!
