So the post here on Gullible states it would be 30,000 ish for all the items.....
where did the fact finders find this???

It was on MSN a few days, maybe a week?? ago with a complete breakdown of what things would cost :
(I do realize some of these things may be a bit arbitrary, size/karat of gold rings, exact kind of dancing girls )

    One partridge
    $15
    Pear tree
    $89.99
    Two turtle doves
    $40
    Three French hens
    $45
    Four calling birds
    $399.96
    Five gold rings
    $325
    Six geese a-laying
    $300
    Seven swans a-swimming
    $4,200
    Eight maids a-milking
    $41.20
    Nine ladies dancing
    $4,576.14
    10 lords a-leaping
    $4,039.08
    11 pipers piping
    $2,053.20
    12 drummers drumming
    $2,224.30
    Total Christmas Price Index
    $18,348.87

And the total if you added up every day they say it would be around 75,000.

Many facts here I am *very* curious where/how they were checked....

I'm pretty sure their numbers are arbitrary. How do maids-a-milking come in so very cheap compared to ladies dancing? Obviously, they did not include the dairy cows, right? And why are 9 ladies dancing more expensive than 10 lords a-leaping?

Also, last time I tried to purchase a swan it was not $600. One can buy an adult mute swan for as little as $50 (less for hatchlings due to freight savings! LOL).

Can you send me the contact info for your swan supplier? The prices I'm seeing out here (in the District of Columbia) aren't ever lower than about $450.

Also, I didn't know you could buy them pre-muted. I always just muted them myself.

Definitely, no cows were included in the cost of the maids-a-milking. I haven't priced dairy cows lately, but I'm sure that eight of them would cause the cost to increase substantially. The ladies, though, I can explain. The cost of the ball gowns is higher than the cost of the lords' clothing. Isn't that one of the reasons you men always tell us that we're high maintenance? :rolling:

That's $508 a lady, I've seen "dancing ladies" for as much as 2,000 dollars and as little as 40, so that one really depends on the quality of the ladies.

Definitely. When the song was written nobody had what we think is a maid (except for monarchs). Maids-a-milking is most likely a reference to wet-nurses.

I'm not surprised that the going rate for a British Lord is only about 1/100th that of a US Congressman...

This is certainly a possibility, however, I prefer to think of "maid" in terms of the archaic meaning of young girl or maiden.

Ok - after much thinking about this, I looked up the definition of "maid" on dictionary.com. Here it is:
    maid
    noun
    1. a female domestic
    2. an unmarried girl (especially a virgin)

If we take maid to be the second definition, the likelihood that the maids-a-miliking were wet nurses becomes even more remote, as in those days an unmarried girl was unlikely to have had children (especially the virginal, unmarried girls), and thus, would not be qualified to be wet nurses. Hence, we have to figure in the cost of the cows, as well as buckets, stools, and any other milking implements required.
