Mugsy Bogues never won the NBA dunk contest-the shortest person to win was spud webb.

This is a very fair comment, and when that fact was approved I voiced my opposition, though voted to include it. The entry is slightly inaccurate, and would more accurately read "At 5'3", Muggsy Bogues has won more slam dunk contests than any other player his height." To explain, National Basketball Association Statistics Officer Stephanie Smith wrote:

"Spud Webb was (and is) considered to be a top 'small-dunker' in professional Basketball. However, since 1968 Spaulding sporting goods has held a biannual Robert T. Spaulding 'High Dunk' contest, in which Mugsy Bogues placed first in 1990, 1992, and 1994. In 2002 these statistics were added to the Official Record of Basketball Statistics (possibly due in part to its similarity to the NBA Slam Dunk contest and the inclusion of off-duty NBA referees as judges), and it was by this inclusion that the National Basketball Association now considers Bogues, a 3-time High Dunk winner and a constant top-5 Slam Dunk contender, to be one of the most skilled, and certainly the shortest, executor of dunks in the history of the NBA."

Thanks to Ms. Smith for her information, and thank you for your scrutiny, ghettowill2003. Gullible.info could not be called a leading source of information and trivia on the World Wide Web without such careful examination as you and other users regularly provide.

Zack, thanks for explaining this. I felt that it would have been inappropriate for me to discuss it, as I chaired the research committee for that particular day's update. I just sent a note to our web team, and they have added a note to the fact which will point people here through some sort of hyperlink.

I want to see what the general consensus is on this before I submit the paperwork for either an official retraction or at least a revision. (You know how sticky they can be about those...so I want to make sure that we've found the best answer before doing anything drastic.)

comments noted and understood-didn't know they added the spaulding contests-i apologize then and i stand corrected.

Not a problem. Good spot, though!

Legatissimo- Don't worry about the paperwork, as long as you file it before the April recess there should be no delay on forwarding to the Post Facto Review subcommittee.

If I may offer an opinion ... I think the fact would be better explained as follows: "At 5'3", Mugsy Bogues is the shortest NBA player to ever dunk a basketball." I did some very brief research after reading that fact and found this to be repeated statement on several sites.

I would just remove the word "NBA" from the phrase "NBA Slam Dunk Contest". That would make the fact absolutely correct, as the High-Dunk contest is not part of the NBA, but has participants who are members of the NBA (as refs or players).
