Fact: The phrase "devil's advocate" is one of the few sayings used in the Bible that is still common in secular language today.

What is the reference for this? I've done some automated searches through various translations and have not been able to nail down the reference. Thanks!

Keep looking, for you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. But remember, In much wisdom is much grief; and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.

Now go and sin no more, for many are called, but few are chosen.

In the book of Genesis, where the fall of Lucifer is described, there is a brief mention of Lucifer being put on trial for his crimes against God, for which one of the angels was assigned the role of, you guessed it, the devil's advocate. The rub is that when Lucifer was found to be guilty and banished from heaven, the devil's advocate was also banished. The "Old Testament" God clearly felt that those who would speak for the guilty, even though God Himself assigned the angel to that role, should also be responsible for the crime. This theme is found a few times in later books, most notably with Lot and the goat seller.

Piss originated in the Bible. There is a passage that reads: "the dog pisseth on the tree". I am pretty sure of this. I would not make it up.
