    Hi,

I post here to know the exactitude of the fact "3 frenchmen on 5 thinks the sun revolve around the earth".
1 person on 5 believes me. I can't find a way to convince them, since 3 person on five, 60%, is a pretty huge number.

Can someone explain it to me, so i can explain it to the others.

We also believed that the earth was flat. Some people still do.
In fact, I heard a story about a guy who said that if the earth stopped spinning, people would fly off. Of course, this was from a "flat earth" proponent as well.

Brittney Spears believes that time travel is possible.
Many people believe that the lunar landings (8 of them!) were all faked.
There's a guy who is offering a cash reward for anybody who can prove the moon's existence.

I mean, seriously, we'd like to think that everybody is down with the science, but it's just not so.
It really makes me want to jump off the edge of the planet.

Technically, we are all time travellers. Think about it for a minute before you reject my theory out of hand. The only way to not travel through time would be if time were to stop while simultaneously allowing us to keep moving. Now if you're talking about relocating oneself to a different point in the "time stream", well, that's a whole 'nother kettle of ducks, as my sainted granny used to say.

As for the fact itself, perhaps those who believe it believe themselves to be the center of the universe. The earth just happens to be the place where they are, therefore, since they are the center of the universe, the Sun would revolve around them, and coincidentally, the earth as well.

Well it's a result of french arrogance. they refuse to believe that france is not the center of the universe since galileo was not french.

Even then... technically time still exists cause of what happens before and after you move, unless of course you are everywhere doing everything at a single instant, then there is no time since there would be no before, no after since everything is being done everywhere at all points. No way to reference a before and after. I think...

I actually recall a recent survey taken by commission 46 of the International Astronomical Union, where they measured the education of astronomy in general. However, they quickly revoked their statement concerning this in fear of insulting the French government. (The Union is based in France, by the way. Somewhat ironic.)

Well, movement is a matter of perception, so mabye the earth doesn't revolve around the sun. The sun would just be moving very quickly in an irratic pattern. I think that is what the 3 our of 5 Frenchmen believe. You know how those frenchies are.

I guess "Time Followers" would be a better term.

76% of French Canadians are gay, so you have a pretty good chance of them saying yes, if you play your cards right.

Don’t forget that time is an invention/concept of mankind, similar to the concept of Religion… if you believe that there is “time” then there is “time”. It’s all just what you believe.

On the part about us flying off if the Earth stopped spinning, it can conceptually be seen as true since the spinning of the Earth creates a centripetal force that holds us down (since centripetal acceleration is always directed toward the center of rotation). So if the Earth stopped spinning, our inertia would carry us in a straight line perpendicular to the radius from the individual person to the center of the Earth. In other words, we would continue our motion on a tangent line to the Earth's surface.

But what would happen to the moon?:peace:

Ok… I’m slightly confused; I don’t understand your idea of centripetal force “holding” us down. Are you implying that there is no gravity? Gravity is what keeps our feet on the ground, Not a rotational force. If we were standing on the inside of the earth (as if we were the water inside a bucket being swung in a circle over someone’s head) I can see that as being true.

In short could you elaborate please.

just because it would not be spinning, doesn't mean that the moon would fly off. Gravity still exists, rotation or not.

Time travel.. Like when you wake up, hit the snooze button, close your eyes and open them a second later to see that your alarm is going off again? I swear... that happened to me the other day.. I just climed back into bed and closed my eyes for a SECOND; it was going off again, but the time difference was a half an hour.. freaking wierd.

This happened to me once. Except it was six hours.

I also had the reverse... I slept for what I thought was several hours, only to realize that one minute had ticket off on my clock. I was extremely tired (read 72 hours without sleep) at the time.

    Holy sleep deprivation, Batman!

I have a very bad habit of losing time that way - I turn off my alarm without even waking up, then wake up 30 minutes to an hour after I was planning to be out of bed (or at work, sometimes). I hate it when that happens.
