    • Microsoft Word crashes cause 49 million hours of lost productivity ever year.

It's interesting to note that, if we assume only 200 million users* of Microsoft Word use the application regularly, and we define "regularly" as twice per week, the average loss of productivity time per use per user would be just under eight and a half seconds.

    * I didn't look up how many estimated users there are, worldwide, on all platforms, but we might use the data indicating there are currently over one billion Internet users worldwide as a sort of signpost. I don't think one in five is too terribly unreasonable, given the very low use profile listed in the illustration... Surely, heavier users would make up for any short-coming in this assumption.

8 seconds is an average though isn't it. you don't crash every time you use word do you? i don't know, im not a backwards windows user.

Yes... It's an average that indicates that the "cost per use" is extremely low, even though the individual incidents of cost may seem high.

Put differently, if you drive in a car 14,000 times over the course of twenty years, but only get in one fatal accident, the single incident of cost is high, but the average cost per use is very low. ;-)
