I wouldn't say it was a dumb book, but I've never seen "Stargate". Obviously they lifted the ideas from Robert K Temple.

  4.

That original post hurt my brain... I'm not sure if I'm an intelligent life-form now.

The Drake Equation, popularized in part by Carl Sagan, suggests that it's incredibly unlikely, statistically, that we're the only intelligent life in the universe. The Fermi Paradox, on the other hand, suggests that each instance of intelligent life might only last long enough as to make contact with another highly unlikely... So I guess the "best" answer is "...probably not, but if we can't learn to get along, it may not matter."

Personally, logic or no, I tend to think the universe must be teeming with life. It's too depressing to think it's not so.

The universe is so Vast there is bound to be some lifeforms somewhere else apart from earth,as for intelligent...
i sometimes doubt that there is any on earth. But seriously,it must be possible the universe is apparently infinite after all.
some people believe that there would have been other lifeforms on other planets (like mars) because there are bacteria found (well NASA said it was bacteria, but you can't really believe most of the things that any important government facilities say especially american ones) but by the time we came to existance they had been long extinct.
i reckon that if there are intelligent beings on other planets they would probably be plants or like most intelligent animals on earth often fight, and probably either them or us would be extinct by the time either of us found either of the planets(from wars probably because that is the way of most intelligent things, even pets fight).

WOO! i feel like doing random bursts of intelligence! i normally ask questions then just leave them alone and read topics i think are interesting.

If you can find it, get a copy of "The Day After Roswell". It is a non-fiction book written by a former pentagon worker whose job was to take the tech they got from the crashed alien craft in New Mexico and inject it into both military and private research. This explains how the US was able to lead the world in advanced tech like the laser, integrated circuit, night vision, composite materials, and other things. I know there are so-called "de-bunk" sites that shoot him and his book down, but if you read it yourself, you will understand how why such sites exist (a way for Homeland Security to do damage control on leaked info).

Yeah... didn’t you see Alien vs. Predator? That’s where we learned how to build.

Also… there is life out there somewhere... but don’t forget that the light from other galaxies takes a long time to get here, an entire species of intelligent life could have come and gone long before the light from the time of their creation even got to us. If they lived for say... 10 million years, (a bit longer than I expect for us, by about 7.8 million years. suggesting that we started about 2 million years ago), anyhow… we could blink out of existence before their signal even gets here. Our signals would pass each other like ships in the night.

Hello - just took a look at this posting and before comments can be made regarding the initial posting the phrase Socratic irony should be looked up, and yes Wikipedia will do although there is a good site at Stanford that probably has more credence amongst those that post on this illustrious site. Link is below

    http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/socrates/

    H. W. Fowler once postulated that irony is a form of utterance that has a double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear and shall not understand, and another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware, both of that “more” and of the outsider’s incomprehension.

A statement such as "is there other intelagent life in are universe” can be seen as a badly educated person asking a question or a fairly well educated person using irony while asking a question. But I'm sure that you all understood that being keepers of all knowledge.

With regards the actual question of intelligent life books such as Fingerprints of the Gods and The Sirius Mystery have been shown to be highly selective in the evidence that they use and do not stand up to any rigorous examination. It is highly probable that intelligent life exists out there somewhere and the best evidence for this is that none of it has actually visited us.

Umm..im pretty sure there other life in the universe. Think about this, there are millions of stars in our galaxy alone, and each one has planets it can be as little as 1 and could be many many more. Thats just in our galazy, every star has at least 1 planet. So you think about the odds.

Well, when I think about the odds I try to keep in mind the unlikely odds by which the creatures of this earth were created. But also, consider the few materials that were essentially necessary. A bit of this, a dash of that, a little bit of lightning, and ka-bang -- life.

Lucky evolution created multiple races of varying degrees of intelligence. For example, today we have the earthworm, the bird and the human being. While the earthworm is not percieved by humans as intelligent, it has the ability to do things that say, bacteria, can't.

All in all, I just think that an earthworm probably exists elsewhere, when keeping in mind the vast expanse of universe that stretches beyond this solar system and galaxy. Do I think it would actually look like an earthworm? No. It would be different, because like life on Earth has, it would evolve to the circumstances of its environment.

Everyone keeps bringing up these so called odds. Well, i'll pose this question to you what exactly are the odds? Out of 1000 planets is there supposed to be one with "intelligent" life on it? 10,000? 100,000? or could it be that for every 8 planets (pluto isnt classfied as a planet according to nasa, except on this part of their website... http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/planets/) life is forced, by statistical average to appear.

The answer cannot be found by man. We simply do not have enough data to know the answer. Quit flinging your so called "statistics" around like there is any basis in fact to support it. Also, whoever brought Carl Sagan up needs to do some more research on the subject of his personal life. He was a known user of the halucinogenic drug LSD. Try this site to reference my facts: http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F60812F7395A167493CBAB178ED85F438785F9

As the famous swiss mathmetician Leonhard Euler said in the 1700's "there are three types of lies. Lies, damned lies, and statistics." Granted it was a litte rougher when he said it in the 1700's, the original version was more along the lines of, "There are only three kinds of untruths. Lies, condemned lies, and statistical models."

    Hello all,

I agree on the post about statistics being misleading. However statistically speaking taking Earths age into account even our planet might have had 10-15 civilizations on it prior to us. In fact assuming that we don't blow our self to Kingdom cone in the next 5k years humanity will probably master everything there is about science and earth will become depopulated a memory of origins. 10k years and probably there wont be any humans left, how long will it take for all traces of humanity to disappear? 100k years or maybe our future children will clean up before they leave, give the next generation a fresh start. This cycle might have happened 10-20 times already..

Btw i like to think that the "prime directive" would apply to most aliens visiting us.

You think that was your only mistake? Allow me to take you to school by providing you with a rewrite of your post:

Yes, we are the only intelligent life forms in OUR galaxy. There are other galaxies that have intelligent life forms; however, we will never encounter them. I say this because GOD will come before we get the chance to encounter them. When that happens Earth's history will be over and then we will be able to meet them. I’m sorry if you aren't a Creationist. You can believe what you want to believe. If you have any further questions email me at antwonw@gmail.com. Nice rewording RedStateRefugee. that "Gmail dot com" made me think i was hallucinating or something to that extent. You rewording clears it up that in fact I do not have the mental disability, but antwonw instead.

Do bacteria actually have any intelligence at all? I had figured that everything they did was purely because of the chemistry of their "bodies". Do they by ANY means 'consciously' perform their actions?

    Another thing to Antwonw.
" I say that we will never see them .." , "..and then we will be able to see them."

arent those statements just a bit contradictory?

There has to be other living beingin the universe..............
Thinking that earth and it's ceatures are the "only" beings is conceited.
It's like saying if you are not a chosen one you will be left behind when Jesus returnes.
I don't think Jesus is coming, he was just a man, a good man, but just a man, he's dead and that's it.

I like to believe a quote from Calvin and Hobbes:
"You know what Hobbes? Sometimes I think the surest sign of intelligent life in the universe is that it has not tried to contact us yet." –Calvin

As to what kunfufaresi said, I don't think two alien races meeting would result in much good. Look at what happened to the Native American cultures when met by Europeans (not that the natives wouldn't have done the same). Not only where their physical conflicts, but diseases where mixed. Of course, there wouldn't be any transmittable viruses but microorganisms would be swapped and, depending on how well the culture in question is connected, there would be mass contamination. Then the dominant (usually the invading race) would control the other civilization and, if the environment is habitable for the invading race, they would begin to colonize.
