I saw this on my Google page one day: The length of one's pinky is the strongest statistical predictor of intelligence.
I've not been able to find anything about that on the web. What is the source, and why is this true?
Allaya
This is actually referenced to "Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior" by David Hawkins.
Indirectly quoting: In certain studies done by MIT, it has been shown that generally, those with longer pinky fingers on the hand that they do not write with relative to the hand that they do write with has a higher Intelligence Quotient.
I never looked into a hypothesis as to why this is true, but it may be attributed to certain links hardcoded into DNA.
While we're on the subject? Any info about the pinkie as far as, reducing or increasing (in length) over evolution periods? Did the dinosaurs have 4 "fingers"?
You're correct. Most dinosaurs actually had three digits on their upper appendages, perhaps with a shortened "thumb" or internal bones that didn't protrude as a thumb does.
I actually did some research with a professor who was writing a dissertation on the progress of the pinky throughout all species since earth's formation. While I'm bound by a confidentiality agreement until the release of the paper, I can tell you that the findings are sure to astonish members of the archeological, anthropological, and palmistry communities.
Look for the as-yet-unnamed final paper on Google Books in the coming year.

Well, now. How you describe it. No author, no title, I'm sure it'll be extremely easy to find this one!
Wow! I've honestly never noticed this before...they ARE different lengths! Eeeww...that's kind of creepy.
Thanks for the explanation!
I bet Athene has a cute pinky finger.
Wow... I'm out of luck.
The pinky finger of the hand I write with is at least .5 cm longer than the one from the hand I don't write with.
...I hope that doesn't mean that lowers my IQ.
Statistically speaking, yes. However, you might be one of the 15% to whom that rule does not apply.
Well damn, I always complain about having midgity pinkies they are about 1 and 1/4 inch shorter than my index and ring fingers.... So, I'm going to have to dispute this fact just out of ego. My IQ has been clocked above 150. Now, I know that the IQ tests are not the be all and end all of intelligence, however, consider the fact that I am an accomplished french hornist in a travelling orchestra. Also, I have a PhD in Physics and am currently working on a second in Geography.
Now you might say that I am an abnormal freak of nature, having short pinkies and an accomplished academic life. However, after reading this thread I decided to do an informal survey of my classes. I measured each student's pinky in relation to their index and ring finger and plotted those results against their grades in my classes. And it appears, in my limited study, that there is no correlation to grades and pinky length.
Please voice your oppinions about this, however, I will remain a staunch opponent of this so called "fact."
Cadet, the fact is comparing one's pinky fingers to each other, not the other fingers on the hand. For instance, my left pinky is 1/4" longer than my right. My IQ is 140.
-shrug-
It is amusing that after you were braging about how smart you are, you are proven wrong because you can't even read correctly. I'm sure your dominant pinky is huge.

man, i wonder why he was banned
yeah he seemed like such a polite and articulate guy
shame really, I found him stimulating...
...Like an anal probe with a violet wand...

That explains a lot.
I think someone forgot to take his happy pills the day he got banned.
Lol...This guy has some issues that involve being to young to even articulate a constructive comment, and a psychological structure involving the fact that his mother never hugs him and that he could never find Waldo in a children's game.
I couldn't ever find Waldo either, you *%)(&%#(*^$#
I FUNDO WALDO U DICKEWWEED
I am sorry for the confusion, but I meant Willy, as in Wooly Willy.
All things considered, I'd rather you guys didn't make those fake banned messages. I'll go in and filter it out if I have to, but it seems like asking would be an easier solution.
I agree... it's distracting.
That, and it's legat's site.

can we use regular html tags in here or only special ones?
I dunno
Hey, what's up? I write with my right hand, and my right pinky is about 1/4" longer than my left. Also, my left pinky doesn't look exactly like my right. It somewhat reminds me of a smaller midget pinky that doesn't look quite like a finger, but more of an appendage. Nevertheless, my IQ I'm pretty sure is at least 140, and I was reminded many times I was gifted growing up. (I also think I'm pretty smart, but then again, who doesn't?).
I've also discovered that my body is asymmetrical (the left side is just slightly more developed and larger than my right, which makes me question if the pinky finger is evolving to be a more integral part of the hand, or having a less important role.) I've also noticed that my right eye is somewhat less effective as my left, and I'm virtually 40% deaf in my right ear, but my left ear's hearing is astounding. I am 100% Chaldean (chances are you don't know what that is, look it up).
Thanks for reading..
Sounds like you're a mutant of some sort.
The first x-men man perhaps? sad because that just makes it x-man....
I'm not sure by what method everyone is using to measure and compare their pinky finger lengths; but if I hold my hands side by side with my palms open and facing toward me and then I line up my joints and the wrinkles in my skin that form at each joint, my pinky fingers appear to be exactly the same length and symmetrical, as does the rest of my hand and fingers. I don’t know what my IQ is, but I’ve always ranked in the top 10% or 5% percent of my classes throughout my formal education and I graduated with honors from college with a bachelor’s degree. I’m not sure what, if anything, this information may mean but I just thought I’d add it to this thread.
I also found this thread by Googling “pinky finger length intelligence” after reading the gullible info fact in which this thread was originally started. It is an interesting topic and I still wonder if it’s based on actual fact or clinical study, or not.
Put your two hands so that the palms are facing you and the pinky fingers are next to each other. Line up the crease in the finger at the knuckle where it joins the palm. Then do the measurement.
Some immortal handsome Guy
Gave me such tearful symmetry
Hmm, but that wouldn't make sense. My left pinky is the exact same size as my right pinky. My IQ is between 160 and 170. 15% of the analysis proved otherwise? It was probably just a coincidence. You can make people believe anything with statistics, like "second hand smoke kills".
