Well, a country has to be able to defend itself, have a population above 0 at all times, be self-governed and have a government, and I believe own territory.

Of course, I would affirm that the Vatican City is NOT the smallest country, as it doesnt have a permanent population.

  1.

Unless I'm mistaken, it has a permenant population of several hundred people, including the Pope.

They have a guard, for the premises and the Pope himself, as well as a steady supply of altered altar boys.

While looking for interesting facts on Malta in Google (page 11), I found this page. I also found the smallest country, before I came to this page. It is called (as mentioned afore) the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM). The smallest ISLAND that is a country is Pitcairn Island, with an area of 1.75 square miles. However, SMOM is the area of two tennis courts, so it wins hands down. It also has a permanent population of about 80, while the Vatican has a permanent population of about 100. Both are recognized as sovereign entities (in other words, it's a country) under international law.

Nanopolis, a city-state in Nanopoly (pronounced like Monopoly, but with no Mo, just Na). Located on the South-by-Southwestern corner of Fullerene Island in the furthest reaches of the Irish Sea, Nanopolis is the smallest country in the world. It has the highest population density in the world due to its miniscule land area. Nanopolis is several orders of magnitude smaller than the Malta, the Vatican City, Luxomburg and other runner-ups.

Unfortunately, both Malta and Nanopoly is also orders of magnitude larger than Sealand, which only has a population of around 5.

When talking about size, does that mean population or land area?

Sealand wins for smallest size and population. From the top view, it's about an acre or so, and has only 5 or so people living there. Plus, they had a team in the FIFA World Cup last year, but they lost to Northern Cyprus, so if that doesn't prove that they're a country, then what does? The Vatican doesn't have a World Cup team...

  4.

luxemburg is not small at all there are 3 country's in europe including the vatican that are way smaller

If the vatican did have a team, they should have the pope has their keeper. I could just see it now...
And the pope receives the ball in the box, blesses it, says a short prayer, and kicks it down the feild. The pope scores!!!! Thats Ninety to Zero, Vatican in the lead.

God wills it! -announcer, "and sealand's goalie was just struck by what appears to be holy lightning, the vatican wins by default as sealand now only has four people left on the pitch."

I can see a gullible ball now, it would be made of a see-through material, that way the stadium lights would fool you into thinking it was in a different position.

No, it would be made of a super conductive material that would get a static charge as it rolls across the field and would kill the opposing keeper when he picks it up.

the smallest country in the world would have to be Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John. Its has no real territory whatso ever, apart from i guess a couple of buildings.
