Hi guys I read on here that the hottest pepper is the Diablo Negro Pepper. However when I search for this Gullible is the only site that comes up with this. The Guiness Book of World Records has he Red Habenaro, and recently the Dorset Naga is shown to be hotter than that. I was wondering if anyone could give more information on the Diablo Negro or the source for this? Thanks
I didn't research that particular fact, but I seem to recall reading about that in one of my cooking magazines. Apparently, it's a rare, recently-created hybrid of two other peppers, but I don't recall which. It was apparently very difficult to create the hybrid and the resulting plant is functionally sterile, so they have to create each plant "from scratch", so it's only available in very limited quantities at a very high price.
I had not known that the Red Habanero had been surpassed.
The Red Habanero is (or was) the hottest pepper according to the Scoville Test. This test measures a substance called capsaicin, and particularly in 45g of ground up pepper.
The Diablo Negro, however, does not contain capsaicin but instead guafenesin (an alternate form of capsaicin). This means that it actually has no Scofield ranking at all. So, they had to resort back to the old "taste test" method of determining hotness, and some ranking leptologists determined that the Diablo Negro would weigh in at something like 700,000 Scofields if it had a ranking. Also, for the record, it takes ~ 2 years to generate 45g of ground Diablo Negro.
I hope that makes sense.
From what I have found the Dorset Naga averages about 920,000 on the Scofield scale. It has not been put in the World record yet but it was only produced this year. I mainly want to know this because of vanity. I want the hottest pepper plant for my birthday. :)
Well, the Diablo Negro is so expensive and time-consuming to produce that it would be next to impossible to get it for your birthday anyway.
This guy was not impressed with the Dorset Naga.
It's hard to say. Scoville isn't the only indicator of hotness, just the only standardized indicator.
Well until the Dorset Naga makes the record books, I believe I will stick with the Savina. As much as I would love to have the Diablo Negro, it is out of my hands. I don't wish to use the peppers so much as I love plants. So maybe next year I will have the Black Devil. :)
Wear gloves, no matter which you try.
That reminds me of a story, wherein a woman in India was being assaulted in her house. The guy had his pants down and she managed to fling ground chili pepper on his sensitive areas.
He was forcibly dragged out of the shower by police.
