I once read a day-by-day calendar that had a random fact for every day. There was one I rather liked. In a marketing campaign Pepsi once had in the 90's, the company had a slogan. I forget what it was in english, but apparently they had horrible translations. The slogan as advertised in china said "Pepsi brings your ancestors from the dead".

In the early '70's, as Coke and Pepsi were just beginning to make inroads into the communist states, Coke had to change it's slogan of "I'd like to teach the world to sing..." to "I demand that the non-communist world read from the Book of Mao" due to restrictions on their advertising "liberties".

I remember seeing that one, too. The slogan was something along the lines of "Pepsi wakes you up". I'll try to find it again for you, Geog.

**edit** I found it - the slogan was "Come alive with Pepsi."

During the Khmer Rouge, Pepsi was called simply "The Cola" since Coca-Cola was banned in Kampuchea. Now Pepsi has the motto "It's the cola," which stemmed from those days.

Sounds like out West in America, where I've been told everything you drink is a "Coke" whether it's Pepsi, Mountain Dew or any other kind of soda. Of course, we Michiganders know that it's all "pop."

I remember when Pepsi had no color.

Many of you probably know this, but Coca-Cola used to contain about 6 milligrams of cocaine in each bottle. It was intended as a sort of alcohol without the vices of alcohol. Then, in about 1910, cocaine was recognized as addictive and harmful and was therefore made illegal. Even today, Coca leaves (minus the cocaine) are added to the crazy concoction purely for taste.

In Geourgia (the state) they also call any kind of soda a "coke," and at least among MY relatives and friends, if you're from GA and like Pepsi better, you should be excommunicated from the state (Coke was invented in atlanta, and to like Pepsi is to be a traitor) No offense, those of you who think pepsi's better. I don't care, personally.

Due to the coal mining in Georgia (note the spelling if you want to pass yourself off as being from there), I suspect that the "coke" is actually the residue from mining, not the kind of Coke that the rest of us drink. Does it taste kinda chalky? :-)

I've heard of that before. So people sometimes say, when ordering a soft drink, "I'll have a Pepsi coke."

  2.

Be careful. The Coke Police will be after us.

Is it a coincidence that Coke and Coal are both audibly in the name?

In India it's referred to as 'a cold'...it sounds weird, but it makes sense in Indian languages. So if you say "I want a cold", it means "I want pop".

And how many of you can tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi? I can't...

I can tell the difference. Pepsi is sweeter. I personally like a mix of about 75% Coke and 25% Pepsi if I'm going to drink pop at all.

I like Rum and Coke when the ratio is 100% Rum and 0% Coke.

I can't stand Rum and Pepsi, though.

  3.

There is a difference - my preference is for pepsi. Although I drink it so rarely that my vote should make little difference.

Fact T. That is the correct ratio for Rum and Coke. Rum is my spirit of choice, but my choice of mixers is 'unusual'.

yeah, but why would you want that?

  6.

because the coca cola company is a big company which is, by definition, evil. also soda be bad for your teeth. and brains

  7.

That's it, I'm going over to the "clear carbonated/alcoholic drinks" thread...I can see there's no lovers of the gentle Sprite here, or, for that matter, it's angry relative, Uncle Vodka.

And, in California at least, there's no "pop", it's all soda. My out-of-state (Oregon) buddies and I have argued about which is the better word (often in the presence of Uncle Vodka) and have, surprisingly, not wanted to change our stances on this issue. He's got a convincing argument going for "pop", though - less letters, less syllables, fast and easy to pronounce...

    That's interesting.

What did you guys call orangeade?

  9.

I'm talking UK here. It was also known as orangeade. Which of these flavours / brands remains:

    Dandelion and Burdock
Sarsaparilla (pronounced sasperella where I came from)
    Cream Soda
    Irn Bru
    Tizer

    I particularly liked Blackcurrant Soda

To the best of my knowledge:

    Dandelion and Burdock. Tick.
Sarsaparilla (pronounced sasperella where I came from). Cross.
    Cream Soda. Cross.
    Irn Bru. Tick.
    Tizer. Tick.

But I'm far from qualifying as a soda/pop fan, I only drink water and fruit juice.
