"Prolonged erections are the leading cause of hypoxic brain damage among men."
I'm curious, how much oxygen rich blood does the brain have to be deprived of for brain damage to occur? My girl friend (a nurse) has confirmed that this fact is correct. However, we cannot find anything about the actual volume that the penis holds (I know, it'll probably vary - how about a range?). We've checked the medical and biological databases for journal articles, her text books and medical encylopedias, and google of course. We've come up empty handed. So, how much blood does a penis hold when erect?
This is just gonna be an awkward conversation.
Anyway, I think it isn't that the penis holds a ton of blood, it is because prolonged erections divert just a little too much blood for too long and so the brain damage occurs. Normally, it wouldn't mess up your brain.
I agree, it is somewhat of an awkward subject. Looking around I've noticed a few posts from people who have been subsequently banned, frankly I'm a little worried I'll be banned for posting what could be construed as a lewd and petty question.
But come on, surely you guys want to know how much blood your penis diverts from your brain. I agree that it isn't a large amount, and that time is probably the biggest factor. "Normally, it wouldn't mess up your brain" I agree, after experiencing several erections in my 24 years I have yet to experience any brain damage (or maybe I have and that's why I'm so stupid).
What gets me is when you donate blood they take about 1 pint - that blood is gone instantly and it takes about 8 weeks for your body to fully replenish it. I'm no rocket scientist (a grad student in the social sciences actually) but I don't think my penis could hold onto more than a pint of blood. Maybe the body rapidly replaces the oxygen carrying red blood cells but I doubt it could replace a consequentially large amount in less than 4 hours time after donation. This brings me to another question, why is it that a sustained erection has the potential to deprive the brain of oxygen but donating blood does not?
An easy way to find the volume of the average penis is to measure your own erect member. Use a string and measure around the penis at two or three heights, then average the numbers you got. That is the circumfrence of your penis. Now convert that into the average radius by dividing by 2pi. Now that you have the radius you need to find how long your penis is. Using the string method works just fine. Now plug the radius and height into this equation: volume = pi*R(squared)*Length
As long as your penis is between 5 and 7 inches for a white male and 6 and 8 inches for a black male you are average.
Now go forth and measure, if you want to get a true average ask your friends for their measurements too. You can have a little measuring party!
Lost,
Consider that when you give blood, your blood continues to flow throughout your body. When you have an erection, more blood flows to a place other than your brain for the duration. Like if you hit your hand with a hammer... the blood is all going to repair the damage and you may feel light-headed or even faint. (I know...something similar happened to me when I was in junior-high school.)
