The birds chirping at the end of Layla are created by Duane Allman using a glass slide (it's actually a Coracidin bottle). Where did you ever get Mel Torme? Duane used that effect in other recordings as well. I've recreated the sound using that technique. Disappointed that you were so inaccurate here, makes me doubt the credibility of other info. in this column.

Interesting you hedge your bet by first saying it was a glass slide and then "correcting" yourself immediately and saying it's a Coricidin bottle. Since you make 2 assertions that actually contradict each other it makes me doubt all the information you have put forth. I imagine you probably mean a Coricidin bottle as a glass slide.

yes, we have heard these rumors but, like so much rock 'n' roll trivia, it is only partially true.

But I will elucidate for your benefit. Mel was beginning work on "A Partridge Family Christmas Card" in a recording studio down the hall from where the finishing touches were being put on Layla by Eric, Duane and a few others. (I'm telling you, you can't make this stuff up!') Eric and Duane didn't like that the ending of Layla was essentially just a fade away and they wanted something to punctuate the end of the instrumental portion. One of the engineers was asked to help out with the Torme recording while Eric and Duane considered what they wanted to do.
Mel was amusing some of the "Partridge kids" with his bird call immitations and the engineer thought that perhaps that would be a good way to end Layla. He took a recording of Mel's bird calls and brought it back down the hall and made the suggestion. Duane liked it immediately but Eric took some time to agree. Duane thought he might be able to make a better bird call and experimented with a few items including a Stroh's Beer bottle but in the end they all agreed that Mel's bird call was the one they liked best. Tom Dowd, the producer, was designated as the person to get the necessary clearance from Mel to use the snippet, which he graciously agreed to without payment or attribution.
