I wish you routinely reported your sources.

Unfortunately, due to the sensitive nature of some factoids, we cannot reveal the sources. That led upper management to take the "news agency" route and protect all sources.

I had a brief email conversation with the original poster. She talked about how much they like learning this stuff and telling their friends, and then asked about mobile homes. I then did some research, and she's a physicist at Appalachan State University! She should know better! Sigh. So, I Googled her, got some background info (she worked with lab rats in the psych department, was a physics major at UNC, wrote about optical fluorescence, etc.), and made a custom-made batch just for her that should hit the font page tomorrow.

    Tee hee...

I'm be so very disappointed if she choses to believe it all. Especially since it was proven that physics majors have the highest IQs... :-)

Statistics prove that statistics majors have the highest IQs. I have doubts about the research, though.

The original poster apparently didn't recognize at first that the December 12 posting for tailored for her. She told me that she told people at her college about the bridge collapse, and some of the older ones seem to have remembered it. She eventually realized that she'd been had, and (correctly) deduced that I must have Googled her name.

    BUT,

does she still believe everything she reads?

Not on GI, but yes, probably everywhere else.

This person brings up a very interesting question. Perhaps one that deserves a little more light. The Factoid industry is a very small and vicious world. There are only a handful of factoid fabricators in the world, and an even smaller subset who haven't fallen to the UNCLE JOHN'S BATHROOM READER Trivial Conglomerate. In the process of doing our work, we cultivate the finest sources with researchers, academics, doctors, mathematics experts, and numerous other types of intelligent and reliable people. In many cases we bring these EXPERTS on staff for a period of time to build up factoidal information. It's a dark day for trivia, though. With the storm clouds of UJBRTC on the horizon, we simply can't afford to publish our sources, lest we see them in yet another UJBRTC edition tomorrow.
